Transforming Packaging with Seaweed: A Step Towards Planetary Restoration

As featured on the  Earthshot Prize website, “ Notpla shows that the future is not plastic, it is seaweed, ”. With this vision, Notpla is redesigning the future of packaging by tapping into the overlooked potential of seaweed to tackle plastic waste. Seaweed offers a renewable, environmentally friendly alternative to plastic. Packaging made from seaweed breaks down quickly, leaving no harmful residue.

This approach of combining material science with nature creates biodegradable packaging that can be consumed, composted, or dissolved. By collaborating with brands like Just Eat and large events such as the UEFA Women’s Euro, the company is replacing plastic with planet-friendly options on a massive scale.

The company also champions industry-wide reform, advocating for stricter regulations on harmful materials and educating consumers on greener choices. To eliminate 1 billion plastic items by 2030, Notpla is advancing a future where packaging not only serves its purpose but contributes to restoring the health of the planet.
